Tips for preparing for kitchen and bathroom renovations

Everyone knows that kitchen and bathroom renovations add value to your home, but they also can massively improve your lifestyle at home. Just imagine having your dream kitchen or spa-like  bathroom in your home!

If you are considering these renovations, however, you need to organise your budget first. A basic kitchen renovation will cost you around $20,000 and $10,000 for a bathroom. High-end fittings and fixtures will increase these costs, so it pays to do your homework before you call a renovation company to discuss your kitchen and bathroom renovations.

A quick Google search for all the appliances you want in your kitchen, bench tops and cabinetry will quickly show you where your budget should sit, and that’s without the cost of construction; the same applies for bathroom renovations. If your $10,000 is already eaten up with your fittings and fixtures, you either need to lower your expectations or increase your budget.

Contact an expert in kitchen and bathroom renovations

Designing a new kitchen or bathroom can be a hard task, because you never know if you are making the best use of the space. Contacting a kitchen or bathroom designer is a very sensible idea, because they know all the tips and tricks for designing beautiful kitchens and bathrooms. Once you have the design of your space organised and know the costs, you can then contact a construction company who will use this design to give you a quote for the construction. It’s at this point that you will know your total costs of your kitchen and bathroom renovations.

Preparing for a kitchen renovation

Do you want to knock down walls and expand the size of your kitchen or do you want to keep the same footprint, but just update everything? Maybe you want a large kitchen island that seats six where your family can take casual meals and you have lots of surface area to prepare food? Do you want laminate or stone bench tops? Do you want to rip everything out and start again or just replace the doors, bench tops and appliances?

There are lots of questions you need to ask yourself, even before you contact a kitchen designer, many of which will be limited by your budget and available space. Structural changes will be more expensive, but if you have always yearned for your dream kitchen and you have the space, it’s definitely worth the investment.

If you are not moving out during the renovations, you will need to set up a temporary kitchen somewhere inside or outside your home. A tip here is to cook and freeze enough meals so that you can still eat healthy during the construction without paying for expensive takeaways!

Preparing for a bathroom renovation

If your bathroom renovations involve structural changes, such as removing walls or changing the location of plumbing, then it’s likely that you will need council permits (both kitchen and bathroom renovations may need these permits). Any good construction company will know which permits (if any) are needed and will organise these for you, but always check to make sure that they are in place.

If you have more than one bathroom, then you should be fine working around the renovations, but with only one bathroom, you will need to organise showers with friends or relatives until the renovations are completed.
